Shivela Middle School opened in 1990 with sixth and seventh graders and also hosted Murrieta Valley High School's freshman class.  The Panther mascot was chosen by its first students, and the school colors, teal and black honor the Native American tribes that inhabited the valley.

CA Purple Star designated schools for their support of military-connected students- 35% of students that attend Shivela have a family member in the military.
